Some Facts

Tinted windows are becoming a standard feature on new cars, marketed as a way to reduce glare, lower cabin temperatures and deflect harmful UV rays.
There has been some recent discussion in the media about the road safety implications of window tinting. So, should motorists keep tinted windows on their car shopping check list?

“Many people buy window tinting for aesthetic reasons but the main reason often cited by motorists opting for tinted windows is to block out the sun and keep their car cool in summer.

“However, tests have shown that plain automotive glass also blocks a significant amount of UV and a reasonable amount of IR radiation - that heats the vehicles interior.

Information from the Cancer Council shows that ordinary automotive glass filters out about 97 per cent of UCB and 31 per cent of UVA radiation, while laminated glass – used in windscreens and some side windows – blocks all UVB and about 80 per cent of UVA. Both UVA and UVB can contribute to skin damage and skin cancer.

“Tests have shown that the interior temperature of your vehicle will reach the same level as it would without the tint. The tint does slow the uptake of heat through the windows but it can also slows the release of the heat too, trapping the heat in your car for longer, All new car come with air-conditioning so the window tints role in the management of cabin temperatures is almost academic” said Mr Borlace.
Tinting can also have some major safety downsides.
“Tinted car windows gives drivers the same effect as wearing sunglasses while driving at night – it reduces visibility in low light conditions.
“Darker windows are also a safety concern for cyclist and motor cyclists why rely on making eye contact with drivers to gauge their intentions at intersections,” said Mr Borlace.
Whether your vehicle comes with tinting or you have it applied after purchase, it is the driver’s responsibility to make sure the tint is legal.
For vehicles to be roadworthy, tint films must comply with the West Australian requirements and be free of wrinkles, bubbles, discolouration and scratches that would impair visibility through the glass and film.
In Australia window tinting regulations can change from state to state and motorists need to make sure their vehicle meet the legal requirements of the state or territory it’s registered in.
